| Who had State bird mockingbird first The Mocking bird Mimus polyglottos is a common bird found across America and was first described by Linnaeus in 1758 in his Systema Naturae as Turdus Polyglottos. Polyglottos means many voices, the Mocking bird is known for its ability |

| to mimic a wide variety of sounds and bird songs and then incorporate them into its song hence these little song birds were often kept as pets and declined in numbers but have since become numerous again. It is also fiercely territorial especially in defense of its nest and young. Identification - 9 to 10 inches in length, - Sexes are similar and both sing, though usually lone males at night. - Grey upper body and head with yellow eye and slender bill, white underneath (Young are speckled underneath) with black tail with white out tail feathers. - Black legs - Wings have white bars and white patch underneath which they use in display and flash to scare and flush out insect prey. Mocking birds like to nest low to the ground or even on the ground, though in dense scrub hence the need to rigorously defend the nest from potential predators. They will have a clutch of 3 to 5 eggs which hatch after 12 – 13 days, another 11- 13 days the chicks will fledge but still be looked out for by parents once out of the nest. The parents will then go one to have another brood having 2 or 3 in a season. The Mocking bird is the state bird of Arkansas, Florida, Mississippi, Tennessee and Texas. Though it is beaten to the title of state bird of the most states by the Cardinal (6 states – Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio and Virginia) and the Western Meadow Lark (also six states - Kansas, Montana, North Dakota, Nebraska, Oregon and Wyoming). Tennessee was the last to name the Mocking bird as its official State bird in 1987; it also has the Bobwhite Quail. Mississippi named the Mocking bird as its state bird in 1944; Mississippi also has the wood duck. Arkansas named the Mocking bird as its state bird in 1929 just two years after the first two states Texas and Florida both named the Mocking bird as the state bird in 1927 but who got there first? Texas did on January 31st, whilst Florida waited until April 23rd. In the resolution naming the Mocking bird as the state bird of Texas it was described as a “fighter for the protection of his home, falling, if need be, in its defense like any true Texan”. Senate concurrent resolution No 3 named the Mocking bird as the state bird for Florida because many women’s groups championed it. More recently many have campaigned to have the Florida scrub jay named as the state bird of Florida due to the fact that’s it’s endemic (Florida is the only place this species exists), endangered due to habitat destruction and it’s naming as state bird would help raise awareness and help protect it’s remaining habitat. |
